Thanks to those who point the way…

Sometime in 2007, SkyCable added The Church Channel to its programming.  This is where my husband and I discovered the teaching ministry of Dr. Adrian Rogers.  All of a sudden, we felt an acute hunger for the Word of God.  We anticipated his preachings and our usual schedule was re-ordered to make way for his preaching on Love Worth Finding.

After a while, I began to notice that Dr. Rogers’s appearance varied greatly on the episodes.  I googled him and to my utter desolation, I found out that he had passed away as early as 2005 of cancer.  Belatedly but profoundly, I grieved his passing as though I had lost a best friend.

Surprising?  I hardly knew the man.  I just watched him on TV, and yet, his teaching reached me and touched me profoundly.  I cannot explain it except that before I started watching Dr. Rogers, I felt like a visitor to a large, unfamiliar city whenever I read my Bible.  I kept on going in circles, I had no idea where I wanted to go or how to get there.  When I found Dr. Rogers, it was as though I had found a person who knew that large unfamiliar city because he had lived there all his life.  And then, when I asked for directions from him, he stopped whatever he was doing at the time, he looked me in the eye and pointed me in the precise direction I should go.

It was as though when he was planning his messages, he knew that he would be addressing people who were befuddled.  When he preached, it was as though the kind stranger offered to ride in the car with me, show me the city so that I can decide where I wanted to go.  It is as though he gave me a mental map to take with me so that I don’t have to get lost.  So that even on my own, I would know exactly where I needed to go.  Very few tele-evangelists do that.  Dr. Rogers was like one of my college professors, he taught me and mentored me in my own study of Scripture. For that, I am grateful.  I hope that in my own teaching, I would be blessed with power to do the same thing for others as well.

His teaching embodied the Hebrew concept of teaching.  The Hebrew word <yara> which is translated in the KJV as “teach” ‘means to point the way. The Hebrew word <zahar> also translated in the KJV as “teach” means to shine a light on.  This is what good teaching does.  Good sound Bible teaching points the way to Christ.  Good sound Bible teaching shines a light in one’s heart. Thanks, Dr. Rogers for pointing me back to the Scriptures and for lighting the way back to teaching the Scriptures to others.

My friend, Mylene Rabago was my Sunday School student a long way back.  I taught the high school girls class when I was a student in the College of Law.  She was the one who encouraged me to take my teaching on-line.  She encouraged me to maintain a blog. Thanks to her, I am now bimbiarias.com.  Those who cannot attend my classes may still benefit from my teaching as long as they can go on line.  Thanks for pointing out to me the way to teach on-line.  Thanks for answering my questions and thanks for taking time out to actually set up this blog.  Let’s hope that we can reach others who will be able to teach others also just as I have been reached by Dr. Rogers.  God bless you, Mylene.
