Observing the Obama Phenomenon Part 2

Political analysts pointed out that Obama won overwhelmingly among voters aged 19-25.  To this group belong the college students and young urban professionals—the new generation of voters who do not espouse the traditional Protestant values of the older generation.  In the end, Obama won 33 more electoral votes than was necessary for him to win the presidency – he only needed 270 to win; he obtained 303 electoral votes. He also won a margin of 1 million popular votes.

Obama made no secret that he supports abortion and gay rights. It is fair to conclude that he won because the plurality of voters in the United States also favors abortion and gay rights.  Obama did not impose his views on the US voters; instead, the US voters already believed in common what Obama personally believed and that is why they threw their support behind him and he won. To use a Biblical analogy, Obama was a man after the US voters’ heart.  That is to say, in Obama, the plurality of US voters found a leader that truly represented them.  He mirrors the mind and heart of a plurality of the American voting population. Obama’s appeal has gone global, in fact. Everywhere on the internet Obama was demonized by many evangelicals, Protestants and Baptists because of his pro-abortion and pro-gay views but this has only widened his appeal.

Obama is not the enemy: remember that we do no wrestle against flesh and blood.  He is just the spokesperson for the generation of voters who favor abortion and gay rights.  And he is a good spokesperson: he is of African-American descent so he is perceived as an underdog who has done well despite belonging to a minority; he is well-educated and he is well-spoken; he is refined and charismatic; he is a loving family man who is in love with his wife.

Obama’s clean-cut image make it easy for people to stop thinking of abortion and gay rights as a moral, spiritual or religious issue.  His appeal has made it easy for people to accept abortion and gay rights as purely legal and political policy issues. Abortion and gay rights are no longer issues of “right” or “wrong;” they are no longer “sins;” they have become issues of personal rights and Constitutional liberties.   A “right” is a power or an immunity guaranteed by the Constitution, by statutes or decisional laws, or claimed as a result of long usage.  A “right” is a legally enforceable claim. (Blackstone’s Legal Dictionary)

When we begin to think of abortion and same-sex marriage as “rights” we cease to think of them as sin, we cease to see them as offenses against God.  If abortion and same sex marriage are rights then no one needs to repent for exercising his rights: one only repents when one commits sin.   One vivid description of the character of the people in the Great Tribulation is that found in Revelation 9:20-21: “they repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils… Neither repented they of their murders (abortion is murder), nor of their sorceries (horoscopes and the occult), nor of their fornication (any sex outside of God-designed marriage), nor of their thefts (corruption in government and in private life).”  They are unrepentant: why should they repent when in their mind, they merely exercised their “rights?”

Same-sex couples want their “right” to marry to be recognized.  Marriage is traditionally a union between a man and a woman for the purpose of loving companionship, procreation and family life.  These days, marriage is no longer a mere liaison or a civil status it is also a legally protected partnership. Those who are married are entitled to certain rights: married couples can claim bigger tax exemptions and deductions.  Married couples can bear or adopt children for whom they can claim tax deductions and social security benefits. Married couples can give gifts to each other tax-free; they are legitimate heirs of each other; and communication between couples is privileged. In case of divorce, married couples can claim spousal or child support.   Same-sex couples do not want acceptance, per se; they want the cloak of protection of the law upon their unions as well. They want the same “rights” that heterosexual couples have.  Before Obama even ran for president some states have already recognized that same sex couples have equal rights as heterosexual couples. As early as 2004, same sex couples can marry and claim rights resulting from marriage in the states of Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont and Washington.  Illinois, Obama’s home state does not yet recognize same sex marriage unions.

I do not agree with the Baptists who painted Obama as Antichrist because of his pro-abortion and pro-gay rights stance: remember that the Antichrist will not be revealed until after the church is taken away.  Obama’s victory merely affirms the existence of the spirit of antichrist. The spirit of antichrist is a world system that ignores Jesus Christ and denies Jesus Christ the glory he deserves. How can abortion and same-sex marriage deny Christ the gory he deserves?  According to the book of Romans, when people do not glorify God as God, people become vain in their imaginations and their foolish hearts are darkened.   When people are pre-occupied with their personal rights, they have no room in their mind or in their heart for God. They will not worship God as the God that he is.  They will not worship Christ as the God that He is. One cannot serve oneself as master and still have Christ as master.

When we choose not to retain the knowledge of God our minds become reprobate: our minds create gods which we begin to worship.  Our modern gods are money, power, property, fame, sex, romance, leisure, pleasure, learning, science and even religion. Having reprobate minds, we do that which is vile, unseemly and unnatural. The book of Romans specifically calls same-sex relationships as “vile affections;” but fornication, adultery and pedophilia are also “vile affections.” Terminating a pregnancy because it is inconvenient is a vile affection for oneself as well.

The proliferation of gods we have made with our reprobate minds cause us to focus on ourselves and our “rights” instead of humbly worshiping God.  For this, Obama is not wholly to blame. We have ourselves to blame.  It is the sinfulness of our hearts, our worship and love of things that are not God that have caused our reprobate minds. This is unbelief and all men are guilty of it. The sin of unbelief is the refusal to believe that God is God and that He alone is to be worshipped.

We cannot point to people who favor abortion and gay rights and blame them for the ills of our society or the impending judgment of God.  Sin, ungodliness and unbelief are the cause; and we are all guilty of sin, ungodliness and unbelief.  Just because we are not pro-abortion or pro-gay rights does not make us any less a sinner. “What then? Are we better than they? No, in no wise; for we have before proved … that they are all under sin;” There is none righteous, no not one.

The solution is not to militantly oppose abortion or gay rights; or vilify those who favor them.  As disciples of Jesus Christ, the solution has and always has been to preach Christ and Christ crucified.  Preach the gospel. Preach the Word, in season and out of season.  Come out from among them and be ye separate. Look for the blessed hope of the appearing of our Great God and Savior Jesus Christ for he who is mindful of these things keeps himself pure. This is what Noah did before the flood.  This is what Enoch did before he was taken.  This is what we must do until Jesus Christ returns.
